Beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, all students at the following school sites will be offered breakfast and lunch at no cost to parents: Wakulla Education Center, Sopchoppy Education Center, Crawfordville Elementary, Medart Elementary, Riversink Elementary, and Shadeville Elementary.
These school sites qualify for this federally funded Community Eligibility Initiative under the National School Lunch/School Breakfast Programs through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“We are taking advantage of this federal program in order to help as many children and parents as we can,” states Superintendent Robert Pearce. “This program has been successfully implemented in other school districts across the nation, so we want to do what we can for the citizens of Wakulla without imposing any additional taxes for it.”
Observes Gail Mathers, Director of Food Service for Wakulla County Schools, “We are offering this positive program as a one year pilot. If it goes well, we will try to sustain it for the future. As all educators know, children who have a good breakfast and lunch are better able to concentrate on their school work.”
This program does not apply to students at Riversprings Middle School, Wakulla Middle School, or Wakulla High School. Free/Reduced Lunch applications will be sent home with middle and high school students at the beginning of the school year for families who would like to apply for these benefits to see if they qualify.
At RMS, WMS, and WHS, breakfast is $1.45 for full pay students and .30 for reduced pay students. Lunch is $2.35 for full pay students and .40 for reduced pay students.
